We cultivate about an acre of vegetables according to organic principles. Last year we were members of the Certified Naturally Grown system, but we have recently submitted our farm as “transitioning to organic” with the NRCS. We will soon be USDA Certified Organic.
We use an approved vendor for our chicken litter-based compost and we use straw for weed suppression and try to minimize mechanical tillage.
Despite claims from chemical companies that their products are safe for human consumption, we know they are safe if we don’t use them at all.
We believe vegetables (and other plants) should be grown in accordance with their inherent, natural state. Nude vegetables, if you will.
We use Permaculture principles of contoured bed layout where possible, but we also owe something to the structured English garden. We generally grow heirloom vegetable varieties because we think they taste better and our ornamental plants are selected for their beauty and regional suitability.
